New magazines, ink, a pack of mint lozenges, and this buttered porridge that’s not rare in Ben Nevis. Freshly chopped parsley. Mouth: wonderful sooty character, with some lemon and pepper (which is very Ben Nevis), this typical dry leatheriness, barley sugar, hay, and preserved salty lemons. Really good. Finish: rather long, with more bitter oranges. A little salty wax. Comments: Ben Nevis 10 has lost those caramely flavours that used to abound in earlier bottlings. All for the better if you ask me. A genuinely west Highland character that’s rarely found these days outside Campbeltown. Colour: full gold. Nose: fresh tar, tarmac, smoked hams and sausages, garden herbs, parsley, a hint of chicken broth… All wonderfully dry. Mouth: much more punch on the palate, with smoked oranges, mussels in white wine, honey biscuits, grapefruit liqueur… The salty side, courtesy of the mussels, is absolutely lovely. Finish: long and fresh, superbly coastal. Comments: should be tasted aboard a boat, seriously, to heighten the mood. This charming wee fellow wins you over in moments. To be honest, I wasn’t particularly fond of the old version, which I found rather overly influenced by new American oak (WF 84) and notably inferior to the 15-year-old. It was often described as being ‘a bit plankish’. Colour: white wine. Hurray, as the previous 18 was more golden. Nose: straight to the hospital here. Bandages, camphor, a variety of balms, iodine, fresh plaster, followed by lemon and smoked oysters. It’s not an overly complex nose, but for me, it ticks all the boxes. More importantly, it buries our aperitif six feet under – or rather, under the beach! Mouth: perfect, powerful, sharp, saline, lemony, and intensely smoky. There are some small berries, a hint of rubber, a touch of tar, and a very persistent smoky, maritime character. It gradually becomes creamier, but never excessively so; the white oak behaves admirably. Finish: long, with a lovely bitterness that’s ever so slightly syrupy. The citrus pushes through in the aftertaste, joined by fresh bitter almonds.
